When the animated movie Madagascar came out, it was the Penguins that had me hook, line and sinker. As it turns out, the Penguins managed to capture enough attention to warrant their own animated TV series, The Penguins of Madagascar.
The cartoon fluffed up their profiles and gave them back stories. I like the cartoon for the insanely hilarious dialogue (Well, Rico has damaged vocal chords but there are times when one can make out what he’s saying.) and how they poke fun at stereotypes and at themselves. Obviously Rico is my favorite because he’s psycho. He kinda reminds me of Uncle Fester (from The Addam’s Family), though I don’t like Uncle Fester.
It ain’t top secret that a Penguins of Madagascar Happy Meal set of toys came out. In the United States. Not fair! But since a new Madagascar movie will be hitting theaters tomorrow, I checked out McDonald’s, confident that they will have a set of Happy Meal toys based on the movie and quite possibly a toy featuring the Penguins.
I wanted to say that McDo did not disappoint but I am a bit disappointed. Compared with the other toys, the Penguins are kinda small, the train making up a huge chunk of the toy. I get that the Penguins are small enough that zookeeper Alice can lift all of them at the same time. But if they’re gonna keep them in character, they also should have made added a bit of a hump to Rico’s back.
Already with a couple of made-for-TV/dvd movies, there’s not -so classified info that The Penguins of Madagascar will soon have their own full-length feature movie. Yay! There’s also talk that Nickelodeon will be terminating the series soon. Boo! As if keeping up with Nick Asia’s erratic scheduling and being a buttload of episodes behind Nick US ain’t enough to make a fan want to go Rico on them. Ka-boom!
Still, if you’re a Penguins of Madagascar fan as I am, Nickelodeon will be showing “The Revenge of Dr. Blowhole” this Friday, June 8, 2011 6:30PM. Meet other fans here. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted hits local theaters tomorrow June 7.
